I agree with most of the nominees and winners of this years Oscars, however, my issue is with the best picture and best director category.
The Hurt Locker is a good war picture. It touches on issues soldiers deal with when at war (have we not seen this before over and over?), some say it's the best picture for what really happened in Iraq. Is it? what did we learn about the war? With The Hurt Locker we see the lives of bomb squad techs. In the Pianist we see a Polish Jew who survived the Nazi occupation of Warsaw, and in Full Metal Jacket we see a U.S. Marine observing the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War on fellow marine. I think these are great movies, but people, we are talking about Oscars! Innovative, new, fresh, GREAT films should take home that gold statues, not pictures that has been shot and seen before, no matter how great the story telling is. We've seen these war visuals so many times before, that is what makes me so sick of war pictures.
On the other hand, Avatar was original with visuals we haven't seen before, story we haven't heard of before, and great directing to carry out a unique story telling. Give me an example of what could be compared to Avatar please? I would love to hear it. Maybe you could change my mind.
The best prize should go to originality with the best execution, not a picture that is heartfelt and showcases a different prospect of war. War is war.
The Hurt Locker doesn't bring anything new to the table of grunts-in-the-firing-line movies, it's beautifully shot, well acted, and completely unfocused to the point of, well, what was the point?
Avatar on the other hand... most unique and best to date visuals, beautifully shot, well direct and to the point.
The Golden Globes this year was definitely satisfying. Every year, not all my favorites get to take home the Golden awards, but this year, they did! * Applause *
Congratulations to my top 3 personals:
Michael C. Hall for Dexter [Best Actor in TV series – Drama]
Sandra Bullock for The Blind Spot [Best Actress in Motion Picture – Drama]
James Cameron for Avatar [Best director and picture]
James Cameron has once again stamped the industry with his innovative and creative mind with this sci-fi, action, romantic picture. I waited 4 weeks to go see it just so I would have the best seat, yet, it was still sold out...
This film has been a 12 year process for Cameron. He actually had the idea/concept for this film way before Titanic, but because of the visuals he wanted in this picture, he had to wait for the technology to come out before he could make it... talking about being innovative. . . woaaaa....
The Nabi language is actually an invented language by a college professor who was hired to create a new, speakable language for this movie (which also sounded good). James does nothing less than perfect!
My thoughts? Yes the story is predictable, yes its got romance that you can see through, but fellas, Cameron's first and main priority when making this film was SPECIAL EFFECTS & GRAPHICS... so please, don't dissect the film and try to find flaws, sit back and enjoy this visionaries film whose creative mind and direction has well gone beyond my expectations.
Ok so after trying to create a hype about Haeundae and convincing a friend of mine to come with me, now I look like a total embarrassment in front of my friends (ok I'm over exaggerating) …
There is something about being a film maker that entitles you to never making a mistake with a choosing of a movie at the movies... It's like because your in film, you must be able to tell immediately if a movie is bad or not from the trailer... I thought Haeundae trailer was good... funny thing is my friend who is not in film thought it was really bad so she changed her mind about coming... I guess I was having a very optimistic day when watching the trailer….
how bad was it? bad enough to walk out after what seemed to be the first half of the movie....
Horrible special effects...
I want to say bad acting but I'm not familiar with the japans acting and culture so I could have been just that… None the less it though, it was loud and obnoxious….
and the movie seemed to go and on about all these little sub plots that had nothing to do wt. each other, that just seemed to be going no where… really, the movie was going nowhere, draw a straight line.. thats what the mood of the film felt like… a straight line…
As for AntiChrist, I chickened out. I'm scared of scary movies :O
I'm usually not inspired to write about a film. But I found this film to be fresh, inspiring, and beautiful in every way.
Aside form the fact that this film was shot in the gorgeous town of Barcelona, Juan Antonio Gonzalo (played by Javier Bardem) is what makes this film so inspiring. His honesty, serenity and love is beyond the average persons understanding (depending on how U define average also). His heart has room for just about anyone, and is capable of loving independently more than one individual and give the desired, passionate attention to the opposite person. He goes wherever his heart takes him, and shows compassion and love from the way he expresses himself down to his art of love, painting and communication with his loved ones. His the man who you will learn to love and hate. U will love him because he will love you first, and you will hate him because soon you will realize, he can love more than one woman, not just you.
As for Maria Elena, whom is breathtaking, she will leave you questioning your view of love, fidelity and loyalty. Her acceptance and love for Cristina is what most women in this day and age could never understand and overcome. Hell! I don't know if I could do what she did. She reminds me of a teacher I had in College, who believed you can love and be intimate with more then one individual. That a man/woman is not an object one owns, that he or she can be with more than one person as long as everyone receives the deserving love they want/need. Maria Elena & Antonio demonstrate this beautifully.
As for the rest of the characters, I didn't think anything special. I think Cristina's character could have been more touching and moving by another actor who could have been more capable of expressing their inner desire & feelings more effectively through body language and facial expression. There were moments in this film when Scarlett Johansson was 'acting'. Good acting is invisible. If your watching an actor and you see his/her acting, that actor/actress has failed his/her job. As for the other characters in this film, mehhhh! was AIGHT, maybe a little boring at times. But who cares, Antonio was breath taking!
I shall leave you with this quote from the film:
"The trick is to enjoy life, accepting it has no meaning whatsoever" Antonio
Dyslectic, slightly colour blind with short attention spam... I speak casually, I don't like the norm, & I definitely enjoy using my slang.... Ooo' & I keep it real yo ;)
